My Choice

Sonorous in their absence,
No voices fill the void.
Just quiet in its wholeness,
It’s echoes now deployed.
We creatures to be pitied,
The selfish, selfless self,
Wallflowers and wanderers,
And left upon the shelf.
The waiting girls, unfinished,
The picky ones, unwed,
The cat ladies and renegades,
Who loath to share the bed.
But now that women have a voice,
I can live alone. By choice.

I wrote this in response to all of the people who’ve ever asked me when I’m going to, “find a nice man and settle down.”
